1981 Ford Mustang Notchback - $18,000
Here’s a rare opportunity to own a 1981 Ford Mustang Notchback Coupe with the clean, understated look of an original survivor and the heart of a serious V8 hot rod.
Originally finished in its factory Sand Beige, this Mustang retains its original paint and presents an exceptionally straight body. The undercarriage is equally clean, making this a solid foundation for the performance build underneath. It has a clean title and was recently smogged.
Originally equipped with a four-cylinder, the Mustang has been converted to a V8-powered, 5-speed manual using a T-5 transmission. The combination gives this lightweight Fox-body the classic small-block Ford personality these cars are known for.
Engine & Performance
The engine is a 302ci Ford roller block, bored .030" over and built with a strong collection of performance components:
TRW forged pistons with enlarged intake-valve reliefs for high-lift cam clearance
Stock connecting rods upgraded with ARP rod bolts
Edelbrock-style/eBay aluminum cylinder heads
2.02" intake / 1.60" exhaust valves
Valve springs matched for a hydraulic roller cam
Summit Racing B303+ roller camshaft
Trick Flow chromoly pushrods
KMJ gold aluminum roller rockers
Standard-volume oil pump
Hastings chrome piston rings, gapped at .026" top and second ring for nitrous use
Fel-Pro Performance head gaskets
ARP head bolts
Victor Jr.-style aluminum intake
Quick Fuel 650 CFM double-pumper carburetor
The drivetrain is finished with a T-5 5-speed manual transmission, a new clutch kit, 31-spline axles, a new limited-slip differential, and aggressive 4.30:1 rear gears.
The result is a lightweight Fox-body with plenty of V8 attitude and a combination built with performance in mind.
The car was smogged this month and is currently street-ready. Under the seller's understanding of California's upcoming emissions rules, it is expected to become smog-exempt after 2028; buyers should independently verify the applicable law and vehicle eligibility.
The Bottom Line
This is a cool combination of survivor Mustang appearance and old-school V8 performance. The original Sand Beige paint and straight notchback body give it a sleeper-like personality, while the built 302, T-5, 4.30 gears, and performance rear end make sure it’s anything but boring.
$18,000 OBO — Trades considered.
A clean, straight Fox-body with a serious V8 underneath it. Drive it, enjoy it, and let the car do the talking.
